Shiraz, Iran (pronounced ee-'raan)

These are a few photos of the remains of the grand palaces in Takht-e Jamshid or Persepolis, one of the 4 capitals of ancient Iran(Persia). This city and its palaces were built about 2500 years ago by the great kings of Persia such as Cyrus, Darius and Xerxes of the Achaemenid dynasty.

These kings created one of the greatest and most ancient civilizations in history; a civilization based on respect for the religions and the beliefs of all the nations and states ruled over by Persia.

Cyrus the great was the one who wrote the first Charter of Human Rights ever. He also built a big and beautiful garden in Pasargadae, and he called it Pardis. That's where the English word Paradise comes from.

Unfortunately, upon raiding this city, Alexander set fire to this city and its palaces and burned them down or there would be much more left for us to see and to enjoy today. Yet, the architecture of these palaces and their statues are so unique that you can still see and feel the glory of the old kingdom when you walk among the ruins.

P.S.
I had the misfortune of damaging my camera on our trip to Persepolis. :disbelief: The other camera that we had with us and that I used to take these photos, was not that good and the photos didn't turn out of high quality. That's why I'm putting up only a few of the photos and I'm putting them up as one deviation only. I hope you like them anyway.

Ancient Persia was closer to a democracy than even Greece was.

These are so amazing! I have always loved ancient history. It's just breath taking to look at these photos and know they were built by great kings of the past (especially Xerxes!) I can't imagine how amazing it must be to see them in person.

Yes, seeing that place in person is breathtaking indeed. Hope you'll get the chance to come to my country some day and see Persepolis for yourself!

By the way, I hope you haven't believed that Xerxes was anything like the savage depicted in the movie "300"! That movie is full of lies. Xerxes never looked like or acted like that. (This is how he looked like, just to begin with. [link])

Cyrus, Darius and Xerxes were among the fairest and wisest kings the ancient world has known, and they built one of the first and one of the greatest civilizations. NO historians, even the Roman ones, have been able to deny those facts. Today’s man owes those kings a lot.
What is it with Hollywood and distorting facts in many of the movies all the time?

Yeah, I knew the Xerxes from 300 wasn't historically accurate. That character does make a good villain, but he's not like the real Xerxes at all.

Whoa!

Great inspiration for the next fanfic/ that I write, which is set in Iran/Persia. I haven't decided upon the exact location wthin the country, and may perhaps consult with you about that if you are willing to be my expert, but this sounds like a good spot for the opening location, involving a dig.

This is the huge tomb where one of the Achaemenid kings and his wife are buried! The tomb was build in the mountain, as you can see in the picture. There are three other tombs of three other kings and their wives at this place too. (The other three tombs are NOT in this picture.)
This place is called Necropolis or Naghsh-e Rostam. Necropolis a few kilometers away from Persepolis. It was one of the most amazing places we visited. It was so majestic and mysterious!
